Eligibility

Eligibility for residency at The Cardinal Apartments will be based on a priority ranking system for Stanford employees.

Additional rental programs may be available for qualifying Stanford faculty and staff. Please refer to the Rental Housing Programs Eligibility Criteria document for more information.

According to Stanford University's guidelines, the following people are eligible to live at The Cardinal Apartments:

1st Priority

  • Redwood City Campus Staff employed by Stanford University

2nd Priority – Other Staff employed by Stanford University including the following:

  • Main Campus Staff employed by Stanford University
  • Staff employed by SLAC
  • Academic Postdocs (also known as Clinical or Research Fellow)
  • Retired Faculty on Recalled Duty
  • Public Safety Officers employed by Stanford University
  • N11 and N99 Staff

3rd Priority – Faculty including the following:

  • Tenure (UTL) and Non-Tenure Line (NTL) (includes Full Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, as well as SLAC and VA)
  • Senior Fellows who are Members of the Academic Council at Special Policy Centers and Institutes
  • Senior Fellows at the Hoover Institution
  • University Medical Line (UML) (includes Full Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor)
  • Acting and Visiting Faculty

4th Priority – Clinician Educator (CE) (includes Full Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor)

5th Priority – Stanford Health Care Employees, Medical Residents, and Fellows

6th Priority – Other Visiting Academics (includes Fellow, Researcher, Scholar, as well as visitor to the Center of Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences – CASBS)

* Qualifying Employment: must be employed at least 30 hours per week (75% FTE) at or above the minimum wage during the entire lease term. Lease term cannot exceed duration of Qualifying Employment.

Rental Rate Eligibility

Non-Stanford rental rates may also apply to those renters who are ineligible for the Stanford rate. In order to maintain occupancy at the Stanford Affiliate Rate, the original eligible Stanford person must occupy the apartment as their principal place of residence. If the Stanford affiliate is in contract to purchase a home or owns a home within the Qualifying Area or one using Stanford's programs, the affiliate will be subject to paying a non-Stanford rental rate. All rental rates are subject to change. A premium of $200 per month applies to new leases and renewals with a duration of less than six months.
